Vans 'Better Days' Campaign

date. Spring 2024

role. Art Director and Senior Graphic Designer

Life imitates art. For this whimsy limited campaign and back to roots aesthetic, Vans wanted to push for an easy, feel good, and vintage vibe. I, being a vintage aficionado, felt like I was the perfect man for the task. With a slight tinge to the political era, I felt like creating a Wolf Caricature to capture the break free non-conformist attitude Vans has would be great to get out of the 'wolf in sheep's clothing' mentality we are facing as a nation. This toon embraces a No - f*cks attitude embedding it with the classic vans checkered pattern, adding brush strokes and cardboard textures as well as creating the word mark for the campaign which heavily harks at embellishments from the 70's and 80's sitcom era logos. It was important to make sure the colors pushed for nostalgia therefore the color palette infuses earthy tones and sepias to transport photography and illustrations back in time. Putting all of these assets together successfully encapsulates this vintage chaotic fashion while remaining elevated and up to standard within a time of sophistication and clean designs.

Signage and Ads for this campaign remained simple, though for an entity like Vans, achieving high engagement retention is easy. Ads ranged from print and digital billboards, to wheat pasting posters, retail and mall way finding, social media, and store fronts.
